Commercial Lighting Design: More Light Isn’t Always Better

It wasn’t long ago that simply increasing the amount of light was the primary goal of most commercial lighting projects particularly when it came to replacing or upgrading fluorescent and HID lights.  However, the latest generation of LED lights and smart controls have changed the game.  Not only are they more efficient but they are also controllable, allowing for improved color rendering. In many commercial and retail applications, this can make a noticeable difference.  When designing commercial lighting systems, it pays to understand the environment and look beyond just increasing the amount of light from the fixture.

Until recently, Color Rendering Index (CRI) was the worldwide industry standard for measuring color rendering from light sources. CRI has its limitations, however, IES TM-30-15, a different method for evaluating color rendering from light sources is a more comprehensive alternative that goes beyond CRI by breaking out color fidelity into different ways that we perceive light.

What is Spectral Tuning?

Gone are the days of simply replacing bulbs with the idea that improving visibility only occurs by increasing wattage.  Commercial lighting design now takes into consideration the enhanced color rendering capabilities provided by the lighting source and the specific commercial or ergonomic needs for the facility.  This process is referred to as spectral tuning (the ability to control light at different wavelengths) and optimization of your environment through lamp selection is now made possible through the measurements made on the lamps according to the standard IES TM-30.

Benefits of Installing Spectrally Correct Lighting:

  • Increasing efficiency throughout a facility by providing correct lighting for tasks performed
  • Enhancing the appearance of product displays improving patient health outcomes
  • Improving patient health outcomes

Grocery stores, facilities, doctor’s offices, and retail showrooms are just a few of the many applications that benefit from spectral tuning.

With commercial lighting solutions, more light isn’t necessarily betterbetter light is better. Lighting innovations coupled with a new method for measuring and thinking about color and light have completely changed the game.  Installing spectrally optimized light in your facility does not have to cost more, however, installing incorrect lighting just might.

Consider the various roles lighting plays in your facility and make this a part of the conversation with your lighting partner.  To set up a consultation or for more information, contact CSL today.
